Refrigerator not cooling but the freezer is fine

Half the appliance is fine and the other half is drifting. On a freestanding refrigerator that is worrying. On a built-in column or a professional side-by-side it is often the most readable problem there is, because the two halves were never sharing very much to begin with.

Dual refrigeration is the reason

Most built-ins above a certain price run two sealed systems in one cabinet: a compressor, an evaporator and a fan for the fresh food side, and a second set for the freezer. It is why a built-in column holds humidity so much better than a mid-market refrigerator. It also means a total problem on one side leaves the other side working perfectly, which is exactly what you are looking at.

So the first question is not what broke. It is which system broke, and that is answered by listening. Two compressors running is a different sound from one, and a technician who knows the model can tell you which one has stopped before opening anything.

The four things it usually is

  • The evaporator fan on that side. Cheapest outcome. The system is making cold and nothing is moving it.
  • A blocked defrost drain freezing the coil solid. Second cheapest, and it comes back if the drain is only thawed rather than cleared and reclipped.
  • A failed defrost heater or thermostat. Ice builds until the airway closes. The error arrives gradually over a week or two, which is a useful clue.
  • A leak in that sealed system. The expensive one. It needs recovery, repair, evacuation and a weighed recharge, and it needs the EPA certification to do any of it legally.

Why the diagnostics matter more here than elsewhere

On a $900 refrigerator, guessing wrong costs you a part. On a built-in that is plumbed, panelled and screwed into a run of cabinetry, guessing wrong costs a day of labor as well, because getting to the back of the unit is most of the work. That is the reason we measure first on these and quote afterwards, never the other way round.

What you can check before calling

Look at the vents inside the warm compartment. If there is visible frost across them, you are almost certainly in defrost or drain territory. If they are clear and dry and you cannot hear air moving with the door held open and the light switch pressed in, look at the fan. If both sides sound identical and both are drifting, it is not this article, it is a condenser packed with dust.

Either way, do not run it warm for a week hoping. A sealed system that is short of refrigerant runs its compressor far harder than it was designed for, and the repair gets more expensive the longer that goes on. Call 914-527-5055 and we will get somebody out.
