Two dishwashers with the identical problem can carry very different repair bills, and the reason is almost never the part. It is what has to happen before anyone can see the part.
A freestanding machine takes ten minutes to expose
Pull it forward on its feet, disconnect, work. An integrated machine is fixed to the underside of a counter that is frequently stone, wearing a custom cabinet panel that was made for that kitchen and cannot simply be replaced if it is marked, and sitting on a floor that may have been laid around it.
So the sequence is: remove the panel without stressing the mounting brackets, release the counter fixings, protect the floor, walk the machine out level so the drain hose does not empty into the cabinet run, and put every one of those things back square afterwards. That is most of an hour at each end, and it is the difference in the quote.
The things that go wrong when it is rushed
- Stone counters chip at the underside fixing points if the machine is levered rather than lowered.
- Custom panels scuff against the adjacent run and there is no matching replacement on a shelf anywhere.
- The drain hose loops incorrectly on refit and you get a machine that will not empty, which was not the original problem.
- Floor finishes mark under the feet and stay marked.
What we do differently on these
The technician confirms it is worth pulling before pulling it. Plenty of dishwasher problems are diagnosed and repaired from the front with the machine in place: filters, spray arms, the drain pump on many models, the door seal, the latch and the control. It is only leaks from behind, inlet valves, circulation pumps and heaters that genuinely need the unit out, and it is worth knowing which side of that line your problem is on.
